This 45 ACP cartridge is loaded with the quintessential 230 grain bullet, although its muzzle velocity is just a tick faster than what’s traditional at 880 fps. This helps the bullet to follow a slightly flatter trajectory, as it remains faster than 850 fps at 25 yards.

The bullet has a flat nose profile, which promotes smooth feeding in a semi-auto and also cuts a neater hole through a sheet of paper. The bullet’s profile is also specially engineered to enhance accuracy, so feel free to set that target a little farther back than usual!

When John Browning created the cartridge in 1904 at the behest of the U.S. Cavalry, he used testing information from what is now known as the Thompson-LaGarde Tests. Colonel John Thompson and Major Louis Anatole LaGarde used live cattle and cadavers to garner their results, utilizing a variety of calibers to decide what the Cavalry needed. The answer?
